Now
What? has
been on the Internet since
late 1996 (www.cog7.org/BA/NowWhat/).
It is a monthly e-zine
aimed at the unchurched
that addresses the "felt
needs" of people.
Each issue centers around
a personal experience,
with articles related
to the topic. Stories
show an individual's struggle
that either led him to
faith in Christ or deepened
his walk with God.
Now What? has covered
a wide variety of subjects:
homosexuality, grief,
depression, mental illness,
infertility, eating disorders,
and a host of others.
We're always open to hearing
new ideas and even new
approaches to previously
posted subjects. Overworked
topics: dealing with personal
illness and deaths. |

Publication
Description, Editorial Needs
(see also listing on page 359 of the
2007 Christian Writers’ Market Guide)
The mission of Discipleship Journal
is to help believers develop a deeper
relationship with Jesus Christ and
to provide practical help in understanding
the Scriptures and applying them to
daily life and ministry. Currently,
we are looking for articles that:
-
explore some aspect of God’s character.
-
help the reader develop a deeper
prayer or devotional life.
-
show how to grow in some aspect
of Christian character.
-
address relationship issues.
-
provide practical help for personal
evangelism, discipling,
or small group ministry.
Successful DJ articles need to:
-
Derive their main principles from
a thorough study of Scripture.
-
Illustrate each principle.
-
Show how to put each principle into
practice.
-
Show that the author has experienced
what he or she is teaching to the
reader; be vulnerable.
-
Engage the reader through good writing
and storytelling. Even though we
use teaching articles, we don’t
want to sound boring, academic,
or “preachy.”

Effective
writing for In Touch magazine presents
biblical truth in a practical and

publish articles with take-away value
— helpful hints, available resources,
or principles our readers can integrate
into their lives. Except in rare cases,
articles are written in first or third

to adhere to sound biblical theology

showcases inspirational stories of
Christians demonstrating God’s influence
in their lives.
Solving Problems God’s
Way (800 – 1,200 words)

can relate. Solutions should be both
practical and biblically sound.
Family Room

with issues affecting children from
infancy through college. Parenting
and other family issues are appropriate

from AMG Publishers help meet the
overhead for the mission division

Every book published and sold has
a twofold effect — blessing the reader
and helping missions throughout the
world. AMG is best known for Dr. Zodhiates’
Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible,
the Complete Word Study products,
and the youth fantasy series, Dragons
in our Midst, by Bryan Davis.
AMG
Publishers' focus is on books that:
-
Help the reader get into the Bible,
directly or indirectly.
-
Facilitate confrontation and interaction
with Scripture toward a positive
change in thought or action.
-
Give a hunger to studying, understanding,
and applying Scripture.
-
Encourage and facilitate one's personal
growth in such areas as personal
devotion and a skillful use of the
Bible.
We have a broad interest in biblically
oriented books including the following
categories:
biblical reference, applied theology
and apologetics, Christian ministry,
Bible study books that fit our various
series formats, Christian living,
women/men/family issues, single/divorce

contemporary issues, devotionals
with a unique angle or hook, inspirational,
prayer, and subjects and content
that lend themselves to gift books.
We have also introduced lines of
young adult and youth fantasy fiction.

Bethany
House is
a leading publisher of Christian fiction.
Recent titles include the Abrams
Daughters series by Beverly Lewis,
the Heirs of Montana series
by Tracie Peterson, Like a Watered
Garden by Patti Hill, The
Measure of a Lady by Deeanne
Gist, and River Rising by
Athol Dickson. We are currently seeking:
Historical
Fiction — stories in any
historical setting prior to 1950.
Most of
our historical
fiction is developed in series. We
specialize in fiction set in the
U.S. in the
1800s.
Contemporary
Fiction — stand-alone novels
and series set from 1950 to
the present
day. These are often, but not always,
character-driven stories.
Genre
Fiction — both stand-alone
novels and series that are written
under the
guiding principles
of beloved genres. These are not generic
and clichéd, but
stories that
use genre structure to offer a story
with appeal to the widest possible
audience.
Some examples:
Suspense/Mystery
— Waking Lazarus
by T.L. Hines, The Heir by
Paul Robertson
Romance/Chick
Lit/Mom Lit — A Bride
Most Begrudging by Deeanne Gist,
Letter
Perfect by Cathy Marie Hake,
The Secret Life of Becky Miller
by
Sharon Hinck,
A Stitch in Time by Allison
Bottke.
Fantasy/Visionary
— Legends of the Guardian King
series by Karen Hancock,
Relentless
by Robin Parrish.
Our guiding principle is that great
stories will always find an audience,
and thus we consider nearly all styles
and genres of fiction. Successful
BHP novels include the following elements:
- an
intriguing, well-written story with
well-developed characters, a compelling
plot, colorful description, and a
strong authorial voice.
- a
coherent, identifiable theme and/or
particular characters who reflect
Christian values or teachings without
being preachy.
- historical/geographical/social
accuracy relationships that portray
the true meaning of love — commitment
and responsibility rather than merely
emotional and physical attraction.
- clever,
thoughtful prose, ideas and use of
words
- approximately
90,000 words.

based in Winona Lake, Indiana. Although
the house was founded in 1940, it
ceased publishing new material in
the mid-1980s and has just revived
vigorous publishing activity since
November of 2004.
Traditionally, BMH books have been
biblically based, predisposed toward
a theology that is premillennial,
pre-trib rapture in flavor, and often
aimed at an academic market that includes
textbook usage in Bible colleges,
Bible institutes, and seminaries.
Recently the line has been expanded
to include general titles on such
subjects as personal discipleship
(Called by Kary Oberbrunner), coping
with prodigal children (Parents With
Broken Hearts by Bill Coleman), finding
one’s identity in Christ after having
been widowed (Widow For a Season by
Kristine Pappas), and more.
The complete line of titles may be
viewed at www.bmhbooks.com, and most
BMH books are available online at
Amazon.com, CBD.com, and other major
distributors.
About the editor:
Terry White, publisher
of BMH books, is a 40-year veteran
of the Christian publishing business.
He has been the founder, editor, publisher,
or board member of 13 periodicals
that are members of the Evangelical
Press Association, including the Minnesota
Christian Chronicle, The Christian
Communicator, FGBC World, and others.
He is a past president and board member
of the EPA, and has taught journalism/communications
at seven midwestern Christian colleges.
He was Vice President of Communications
for Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship
Ministries for a number of years and
has been associate pastor or music
minister at churches of several denominations.
Both the EPA and the National Association
of Evangelicals have awarded him their
highest honors for achievement in
Christian journalism.

God Allows
U-Turns Press
Faribault, Minnesota
represented by Allison Bottke,
editor
Publishing
House Description, Editorial Needs
(see also listing
on page 369 of the 2007 Christian Writers
Market Guide)
New volumes
in this acclaimed Christian inspirational
book series will be published by the
newly formed God Allows
U-Turns Press. Each book will contain
approximately 50
uplifting, encouraging,
and inspirational “slice-of-life” true
short stories written by
contributors from all over
the world. These true stories must touch
the emotions. We want
human-interest
stories with a spiritual application,
affirming ways in which faith choices
are expressed
in daily life. Show how the choice made,
either through a change of heart,
attitude, thought, and/or
behavior, clearly shows moving closer
toward God. Using a
“U-turn” lesson/analogy
within the story is a plus.
Special needs:
Three
topical volumes are in pre-production
now with future release dates in
2008/2009/2010. Submission
deadline for attendees of the Writing
for the Soul
conference is June
30, 2008. Writers guidelines appear
at: www.godallowsuturns.com
God Allows U-Turns — Parents Setting
Boundaries
Seeking
stories primarily about overcoming challenges
with adult children who
overstep boundaries.
Have you been victorious in overcoming
enabling patterns? How
has parenting
(or grand-parenting) a difficult adult
child brought you closer to God?
God
Allows U-Turns — Boomer Babes
Rock!
True
faith-filled stories by, for, and about
baby boomer women. From empty nesting
to menopause, no
subject is taboo. Have you stopped sweating
the small stuff? How is
God changing your
perception of the world in your boomer
years? What new path has
he led
you on?
God
Allows U-Turns — Writing from
the Heart and Soul
Do you have
a passion for the written word? Perhaps
you write on your lunch hour at
work, or journal
every day, or maybe you make a living
as a writer, it doesn’t matter. If
you view your world from
the eyes of someone who writes, share
your true faith-filled
story with us now. How
has God blessed you in your journey
as someone who writes?
About

guest on radio and TV, she has appeared

House Description, Editorial Needs
(see
also listing on page 169 of the 2007
Christian Writers’ Market Guide)
At Harvest
House we look for both quality
fiction and non-fiction. For the latter,
we prefer authors
with some sort of platform from which
to promote their book.
There are exceptions
— specifically authors who write well
on a popular topic
addressing the “felt
need” of a large segment of the book
buying public.
Our books
sell well in what’s called the “rack
market.” These are usually books that
can be
found in places like the local grocery
store, drug store, airports, and at
mass
merchandising outlets.
For fiction,
we prefer character-driven novels as
opposed to plot- or
message-driven fiction.
We currently
do not publish to the youth market.
Gift
books are primarily art-driven, not
text-driven and are acquired by our
full
time gift book editor,
not by our editors who attend writers
conferences.

information on the books we publish,
we suggest a visit to our

Kregel
Publications seeks works
that address a popular audience
by relating the Bible to everyday
life. Prominent on this list are
works for moms and women (an area
of particular emphasis at the
moment); Bible studies or other
books that relate truth to life;
fiction; and books for young readers.
We're also looking for books that
will help twenty-something Christians
and "seekers" relate
to the culture.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Regarding
fiction, we are
looking for novels that aren't
merely a rehash of the familiar
story lines.
No formula romance (although romance
can be an important component
of
the story). No need for orphan
young women sailing to the New
World seeking love or
middle-age widowers finding new
love with the local schoolmarm.
Fiction should be fresh,
have a believable story line,
and feature characters who engage
life realistically and biblically.
We also are looking for strong
fiction for teens and young adults.

|
|
|

Kidzone
publications are fun, offbeat,
zany books that kids love. Right
now we are closed to
receiving picture-book proposals
for Kidzone unless the
author also illustrates his/her
books or is part of an author-illustrator
team. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|

For
our Academic & Professional
line, we are looking
for works that facilitate the
study
and teaching of the Bible. These
books should reflect the needs
and interests of the broad evangelical
audience. |

Moody
Publishers
Chicago
represented by Betsey Newenhuyse,
editorial director
Publishing
House Description, Editorial Needs
(see
also listing on page 187of the 2007
Christian Writers’ Market Guide)
At Moody
Publishers, we look for ways biblical
truth can intersect with both current
issues and
culture and with real people’s everyday
needs and struggles. And we desire
to glorify
God by publishing with excellence, by
treating our authors fairly and as part
of our extended family,
and by representing Christ in such a
way that millions worldwide
will be drawn
to Him.
What
we need:
We have recently
organized our acquisitions efforts into
several categories: Church Life
and Reference (primarily
for pastors and church leaders); Fiction;
Issues & Culture;
Spiritual Growth;
Women; and Family, Lifestyle & Relationships.
In addition, our Lift
Every Voice
imprint publishes a mix of fiction and
nonfiction for African Americans.
Within these,
we are looking for titles where the
author is intentionally addressing a
certain segment:
moms of young children, church leaders,
baby boomers facing the
“second half,”
etc.
We are less interested in generic Christian-living
titles that are for
“all Christians
18 to80.”
Within that, we continue to be interested
in focused, practical,
encouraging titles
that will
deal with marriage, parenting, friendship,
singleness, and other
life
stages and relationships.
We are also
interested in books that address current
issues and contemporary culture
from a Christian
worldview. Media, economics, multicultural
concerns, business ethics,
“sanctity of
life” issues, questions of fruitful
engagement with those who disagree with
us … we are
looking for authoritative yet accessible
insights into a variety of these topics.
Fiction:
Our fiction
line is enjoying growing success, receiving
two Christy Awards in 2007. We
seek fresh, well-crafted
fiction in a variety of areas — literary
(that is, more character-driven
than plot-driven),
contemporary, thrillers, historical.
No romance. We have had success
both with Tricia
Goyer’s World War II series as well
as Travis Thrasher’s fast-paced
contemporary
suspense novels. Madman, a novel about
the Gerasene demoniac, won
a starred
review in Publisher’s Weekly, as well
as a Christy Award. Feeling for Bones,
a candid coming-of-age
story, released in May to much critical
acclaim. All these
novels have in common a
redemptive message, drawing the reader
into a fresh encounter
with Christ.
Other:
We have a need
for authors who can partner with recognized
experts, communicators
with platforms,
pastors, etc., to bring their messages
and wisdom to life on the page.
We would consider
a project that was somewhat of a departure
from the standard
format
— for example, a short book on business
ethics for the busy professional.

Building
on a rich legacy, Multnomah has
new direction, new stability, new
muscle… Our desire is to
meet the needs of generations, people
who desire life change, and those
who are seeking to make their faith
vibrant and relevant and significant
in the world. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Multnomah
defines itself around seven product
areas (see below). We intend to
apply two "treatments"
to each of the product groups mentioned:
First is the central Multnomah value
of a Transformational Idea or Story.
Second is our goal to creatively
re-think each subject area in new
and fresh language. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Each
of the groups below includes current
titles from Multnomah's list - so
our new product groups are consistent
with Multnomah's history and embrace
current Multnomah authors and books.
Multnomah's legacy is a deep one
and its authors contribute richly
to it. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Multnomah
has core values of biblical truth
and integrity, and we carry those
into the future. But we now also
seek to address the challenges of
our time and culture with fresh
vision, language, and focus. We
invite authors and agents to partner
with us as we move forward…. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|

Transformed
Relationships. Breaking
through to life change - for persons,
families, communities: books on
dating, marriage, and family relationships;
gender issues; enhancing current
relationships; transforming help
for those who suffer. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|

Mysteries
of God. The God you never
knew, invading your life today:
books that include reading experiences
that reveal God in astonishing ways;
memorable explorations of broad-appeal
spiritual subjects. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Leading
Edge. Paradigm shifts for
leaders of all kinds: big-idea books
for leaders in business, church,
and emerging faith communities;
for early adapters, influencers,
and creatives. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Daily
Feed. God sightings: Changing
the face and quickening the pulse
of "devotional" books,
breaking through old assumptions
about how a "devotional"
is used and when … and even
what it's called. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Connections
& Encounters. Authentic
experience, transforming truth:
faith-in-action stories of memoir,
some that play at the edges of isolation
or disenchantment with church and
religion, other that seek to connect
people and groups. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Hearts
and Minds. Changing lives
through the power of story: entertaining
novels in popular genres, brimming
with life and truth and leading
readers into spiritual growth and
a closer connection to God. |

Sue
Teubner, the new
acquisitions editor for Creation
House Books, an imprint
of Strang Communications,
has been in publishing eight
years. As contract administrator
for Thomas Nelson, Sue handled
everything from international
licensing and foreign rights
to contract development and
author negotiations. Sue then
moved into acquiring new authors
for Bridge-Logos. There, she
found her love and passion:
to develop new authors, get
them |

acclimated to the publishing world,
and encourage them through the writing
process. Authors feel safe with
Sue, knowing that their life messages
will be treated with respect, professionalism,

Lake Mary, Florida, and enjoys going
to the beach, kayaking, biking,
and reading a good book. |

Unique
in the religious publishing community,
Tyndale House is
a privately held company that seeks
to be creative and visionary while
remaining true to its founder's
desire to spread the gospel of Jesus
Christ to the world. Our corporate
purpose states it simply: To
minister to the spiritual needs
of people, primarily through literature
consistent with biblical principles. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Fiction:
Our fiction line portrays
characters of faith who rely on
Christ's strength as they face life's
challenges and triumphs. The dual
purpose of Tyndale fiction is to
entertain readers and to encourage
them in their faith journey. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Tyndale
fiction is mainstream, popular,
not literary. We are currently looking
for
womens fiction, suspense, historical
fiction, and anything that is well-written
and we can't put down. We are not
looking for sci-fi/fantasy. |

a proposal from you, that proposal
will then be considered solicited.

Leslie
H. Stobbe Agency
Tryon,
North Carolina
represented by Les Stobbe
Agency Description
(see
also listing on page587 in the 2007
Christian Writers’ Market Guide)
When
Les Stobbe started buying books for
a bookstore, the hottest title was Mere
Christianity.
When he served as editor of Christian
Bookseller magazine, the hottest
title was The Living
Letters. When he was appointed editorial
director of Moody Press,
the hottest
book was The Late Great Planet Earth.
While at Moody, their hottest selling
title was Crying
Wind — and on its heels was Daktar/Diplomat
in Bangladesh. Except
for C.S. Lewis, they
were all first-book authors. Among the
many authors Les helped
get started
in his 21 years in book publishing are
Erwin Lutzer, Zola Levitt, Marie
Chapian, Gayle Roper,
Marian Wells, Kathy Collard Miller,
Marilyn Willett Heavilin,
and Marita Littauer.
Several of today’s editorial directors
in Christian publishing got
their
initial training in book publishing
under Les’s leadership.
Along
the way Les wrote or co-wrote 14 books
for people like Jim Talley, Dale Evans
Rogers, Ken
Nair, and other nationally known leaders.
As editor in chief of the Jerry B.
Jenkins Christian
Writers Guild he wrote most of the lessons
on writing nonfiction
articles and books
for the “What’s Your Story?” Apprentice
and Journeyman courses.
Small
wonder that 14 years ago, when Les was
convinced by authors to begin serving
as
a literary
agent, he committed himself to helping
first-book authors get published, writers
like Ann Tatlock,
Ethel Herr, Frank Simon, Elizabeth Hoekstra,
Mark Mynheir, Austin
Boyd,
Michael Barry, Louise Gouge, Diane Nichols,
and Jerry Rassamni. Authors
recently offered
multi-book contracts include Dave Earley,
Katie Cushman, Trish Berg,
Will Davis
Jr., Doug McMinn, Mary Conneally, J.
Scott Gruner, and Jon Nappa.
Most
of Les’s publishable proposals come
via recommendation from clients, well-known
authors,
and editors, often at Christian writers
conferences. While Les is convinced
that outstanding
writing by fresh voices ought to be
a priority consideration when a
manuscript
is evaluated, he is well aware that
breakthrough writers typically already
have a platform.
Thus he is looking for those fresh voices
in both adult fiction and
nonfiction who above
all know how to tell a story with truth
embedded in it — and
already have a platform
that will lead to sales for publishers.
About
the agent
Les Stobbe has worked
in Christian publishing, as an editor,
consultant, and literary agent, for
more than 50 years. Les has authored
or
co-authored 14 books and more than 500
feature articles, as well as provided
editorial leadership at six publishers.
The Christian Writers Guild’s Editor-in-Chief,
he serves as well as a mentor. He lives
in Tryon, North Carolina.
