Bible Advocate; Now What? (e-zine)
Denver
represented by Sherri Langton, associate editor

Publication Descriptions, Editorial Needs
(see also listing on page 336 of the 2007 Christian Writers’ Market Guide)

The Bible Advocate is one of the oldest religious magazines in America, founded in 1863. It is published by the Bible Advocate Press, the publication agency of the General Conference of the Church of God (Seventh Day).

Now What? has been on the Internet since late 1996 (www.cog7.org/BA/NowWhat/). It is a monthly e-zine aimed at the unchurched that addresses the "felt needs" of people. Each issue centers around a personal experience, with articles related to the topic. Stories show an individual's struggle that either led him to faith in Christ or deepened his walk with God.
Now What? has covered a wide variety of subjects: homosexuality, grief, depression, mental illness, infertility, eating disorders, and a host of others. We're always open to hearing new ideas and even new approaches to previously posted subjects. Overworked topics: dealing with personal illness and deaths.

About the editor
Sherri Langton, associate editor of the Bible Advocate magazine and of Now What? e-zine, has worked 18 years in Christian publishing. She is also a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Focus on the Family, Decision, Discipleship Journal, Today's Christian Woman, and other publications. Sherri has contributed poetry and articles to the collections My Turn to Care, Teatime Stories for Women, Becoming a Godly Man, Faces of Faith, and Chicken Soup for the Soul in Menopause. In addition, she teaches workshops at several Christian writers conferences. Sherri lives in Denver, where she enjoys playing drums and percussion at her church.

(see also listing on page 359 of the 2007 Christian Writers’ Market Guide)

The mission of Discipleship Journal is to help believers develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and to provide practical help in understanding the Scriptures and applying them to daily life and ministry. Currently, we are looking for articles that:

  • explore some aspect of God’s character.
  • help the reader develop a deeper prayer or devotional life.
  • show how to grow in some aspect of Christian character.
  • address relationship issues.
  • provide practical help for personal evangelism, discipling,
    or small group ministry.

    Successful DJ articles need to:
  • Derive their main principles from a thorough study of Scripture.
  • Illustrate each principle.
  • Show how to put each principle into practice.
  • Show that the author has experienced what he or she is teaching to the reader; be vulnerable.
  • Engage the reader through good writing and storytelling. Even though we use teaching articles, we don’t want to sound boring, academic, or “preachy.”

Light & Life

Indianapolis

represented by Cynthia Schnereger, managing editor

Publication Description, Editorial Needs
(see also listing on page 382 of the 2007 Christian Writers’ Market Guide)

Light & Life is a bimonthly periodical that exists to promote thoughtful Christian discipleship from a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective. While it originates in the context of ministry through the Free Methodist Church of North America, it is not published to serve only the Free Methodist denomination. Nor is it written exclusively by — or for — Free Methodists.

Our goal is to offer the evangelical Christian community an energetic magazine that encourages honest, biblical reflection on contemporary topics and Christian living. We want to help develop thinking Christians who enjoy a victorious Christian life and to provide well-written, thought-provoking content that is readable, desirable, and usable — articles and pull-out materials that will equip and excite maturing Christians seeking to live holy lives.

We are looking for submissions from authors who write using current information, provide clear application, and employ contemporary style and illustrations.

About the editor
Cynthia Schnereger is Managing Editor of Light & Life magazine and co-founder of Christian Writers of Idaho. Her writing appears regularly in Light & Life and on the Free Methodist web site. Other credits include: Focus on the Family, War Cry, Indiana State University Magazine, Upper Room, and the book Seasons of a Woman’s Heart. Cynthia is also a Christian Writers Guild mentor.
